Bob and I have both been busy working over these cold, snowy months. He’s been making ornaments including the ornament made from an urchin pictured below.

I haven’t posted in some time. I’ve been busy with the holidays. This year I tried making some quilted Christmas ornaments and I’m really happy with how they came out.

Blue Rail Fence Quilt

I finally found the right blue for my sister’s quilt and have finished the quilt. YEAH! She asked for a rail fence pattern like the one I made for myself.

I found a nice 108 inch wide fabric for the back. She wanted the quilt to cover her bed like a bedspread. The quilt is 95″ x 95″.

New Quilt Design Wall Idea

At least I think this is a new idea. I haven’t seen it before.

I’ve wanted a design wall for some time but I don’t have an open wall to put one on. Then a little while back Connecting Threads had the Fons & Porter Design Wall on sale. The design wall has grommets at the top you can put on hooks to hang it up. I thought great there has to be somewhere I can put hooks and hang this, so I bought it.

After it arrived I looked all around and the only wall big enough to hang it was where my quilt room closets are. Now my quilting room is right off of the living room so I like to keep it looking nice. My husband suggested hooks above the closet. I thought that’s going to look goofy. I didn’t want to put holes in the nice oak closet trim either in case I changed things later on.

My husband and I went to the local home improvement store and looked around for ideas of how to hang the design wall and still look nice especially when the design wall is not hung up.

Between the two of us we came up with this solution and my talented husband made it work.

Solution — we bought some thin oak trim to match the trim around the closet doors. My husband stained the trim to match. And then the big idea — I found drawer knobs that the grommets on the purchased design wall would fit over.

My husband mounted the knobs on the new trim, spaced them accordingly, and mounted the trim above the existing trim. Now if we decide we don’t want this anymore, we just take down the new trim and only have holes in the wall board that can be easily patched and painted. And when the design wall is not up it will still look nice. The knobs just look like a decorative element.

I added a pocket to the bottom of the design wall and put a PVC pipe into the pocket to help give it weight.

I can also roll the design wall up on the PVC.

Plus I made a sleeve to fit. I put the rolled design wall into the sleeve for easy storage.
